Making purchases cheaper than ever, tourists can obtain refunds on their purchases made at stores registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds. VAT is 7%, and generally is included in the retail price listed. Currently, 60 stores in Gaysorn offer VAT refunds. Gaysorn visitors on tourist visas are entitled to refunds of the 7% value added tax (VAT) at stores displaying " VAT Refund for Tourists " signs, and where tax refund application forms are available. Note that expatriates, Thai residents and people on other forms of visa are for the most part not able to claim VAT refunds. Prior to airport departure, customers wanting to obtain VAT refunds must present a completed VAT refund form, plus passport information and purchase receipts, to a customs officer. Certain luxury goods must be shown to an excise official. Refunds may be in bank draft form or credited to a credit card, depending on the amount.
